S&S pre-empt Laura Wood's new witchy YA romance in significant deal!

Yasmin Morrissey, publisher of Gallery Kids, Gallery YA and Simon YA pre-empted world rights all languages in House of Summer Magic plus a second novel set in the same world from Louise Lamont at LBA. US rights have already been agreed with Nicole Ellul at Simon & Schuster. Rights have also been sold in Germany, with other negotiations also in the pipeline. The book will be published as a paperback original in May 2027, followed by the second title in October 2027.

"When 19-year-old Cassie Weyward’s estranged mother dies, Cassie is stunned to discover she’s been left a valuable share in the family home," the synopsis says. "The only condition: she has to spend the whole summer living there with Celeste – the half-sister she never knew existed and who seems to hate her guts."

The blurb adds: "Life is complicated enough, and that’s before Cassie finds out she’s the last in a long line of powerful witches, one half of a centuries-old prophecy and in a fated-mates situation with Luc, a gorgeous and very grumpy vampire. Oh, and her house is made of magic and determined to play matchmaker.

"As the hottest summer on record blazes on, and her love life heats up, can Cassie ever truly mend bridges with Celeste and unlock the secrets surrounding her family?"

Morrissey said, 'Laura's writing is as close to YA perfection as an editor can hope to find. I fell in love with Cassie from the very first page, and would willingly live out my days in the magical town of Wixham. The charm and quality of House of Summer Magic is that every time you turn the page, it creates the same obsession-inducing feeling as binge-watching your favourite TV series – pure joy from start to finish."

Wood added: "I’ve been waiting my entire life to write this book. It’s the ’90s set, witchy romcom of my dreams, a book that brings together magic and romance and small-town charm – all of my favourite things wrapped up in one blissful package. I can’t wait for readers to meet Cassie and Luc and the interfering magical house, determined to help them fall in love."

Lamont said: "Sisters in witchcraft, wolfish young men with immaculate cheekbones and three-piece suits, a mysterious old house of gables and turrets that might just be messing with them all: this is Laura Wood in her absolute element, and it felt like midsummer magic when Yasmin’s offer came through confirming just how special S&S’s publication of this book is going to be. It’s Ghibli meets Gilmore: prepare to be utterly enchanted."
