Piccadilly wins new Katherine Woodfine series AN ADVENTURER'S GUIDE at auction!
Piccadilly Press, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, has acquired An Adventurer’s Guide, a funny magical adventure series for young readers from bestselling author Katherine Woodfine, highly illustrated in full colour by Rikin Parekh.
Ruth Bennett, former editorial director at Piccadilly Press, acquired world all-language rights to two books from Louise Lamont at LBA in a two-way auction. Design manager Dominica Clements commissioned the art from Claire Cartey at Holroyde Cartey.
Part diary, part guidebook, An Adventurer’s Guide is a fully immersive series, packed with quests and woodland wonders! It follows Bertie Snufflington who is an expert explorer, obvious hero and . . . goat. When he discovers his great-gruncle’s legendary lost diary, he sets off on his first-ever quest through the Enchanted Wood to find a hidden treasure, track down the dangerous beast called Fido and earn an invitation to the Fairy Queen’s birthday ball.
But magical forests are full of surprises and around every tree lurk tricksy fairies, baffling clues, disappearing paths and, worst of all . . . Bertie’s very annoying cousins! Will he complete his quest and prove himself a True Adventurer before the party begins?
Katherine Woodfine said: “I am absolutely delighted to be teaming up with Rikin and working with Ella and the brilliant team at Piccadilly to bring Bertie’s magical adventures to life. These books have been closely inspired by young readers themselves, responding to their enduring love of adventure, silliness, exploring nature and, of course, plenty of magic. Working on this project has already been an enormous amount of fun; I can’t wait to share the joy with readers – and perhaps even inspire them to enjoy some magical adventures of their own!”
Rikin Parekh said: “I am honoured to be illustrating Bertie’s adventurer’s guide. Katherine’s text and world building is so vivid, inspiring and exciting, and from an illustrator’s point of view, so much fun, I had to say yes! I really hope the series helps inspire tomorrow’s young adventurers, both human . . . and goat!”
Ella Whiddett, editorial director at Piccadilly Press, said: “From the moment we first encountered Bertie and his eccentric exploits, we knew Katherine had created a world children would want to explore again and again. Packed with maps, spotter’s guides, secret notes and discoveries, An Adventurer’s Guide is Zelda meets Lonely Planet Kids: a celebration of curiosity and imagination, brought to life by Rikin’s magical art. So grab your emergency sandwich and join Bertie on his brilliantly bonkers quest where anything can happen – and usually does!”
An Adventurer’s Guide: To The Enchanted Wood will publish in paperback, eBook and audio in August 2027, followed by the second book, An Adventurer’s Guide: To The Mermaid Isles, in Spring 2028.
