Deal Announcement

Dialogue Books and House of Anansi to publish Nicole Louie's OTHERS LIKE ME

Dialogue Books has acquired a narrative non-fiction account exploring and celebrating the lives of women who don't have children by writer and translator Nicole Louie.

Non-Fiction Editorial Director Joelle Owusu-Sekyere has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Others Like Me: The Lives of Women Without Children from Hannah Schofield at LBA. North American rights were acquired by Shivaun Hearne at House of Anansi. Dialogue Managing Director Sharmaine Lovegrove will be editing and publishing the title on Dialogue Books.

Others Like Me: The Lives of Women Without Children tells the story of women who don't have children. It is part memoir, part exploration of childlessness through candid conversations with other women who found themselves asking complex and nuanced questions around motherhood and lives without children.

This book showcases the many ways in which people find fulfilment outside of parenthood. And because the social expectation to procreate weighs the most on women, it focuses solely on them, their experiences, and how their womanhood can manifest and bloom outside of motherhood.

Nicole Louie says: “I'm one of them – the women without children. So, this book is about their story and mine. It’s the story of why I had to find them and the hope that others will find us and recognise themselves in us. By following the journeys of women from fourteen countries who are not mothers by choice, circumstance, or ambivalence, I hope readers can learn new perspectives and feel empowered to choose their own path to fulfilment. To bring these stories into the world with Sharmaine and the team at Dialogue is a dream come true.”

Sharmaine Lovegrove says: “At the core of Dialogue is the act of bringing voices that are hidden into the centre of a conversation. The world of parenthood is very noisy and listening and considering those who have actively chosen to be child free and understand their space in society, under Nicole’s guidance, has been illuminating, progressive and nuanced.”

Hannah Schofield says: “I can’t think of a better publisher than Sharmaine and Dialogue to bring Nicole’s essential book to the world. With a perspective that is both intimate and expansive, and a focus that’s both personal and global, Nicole shines a light on an ever-increasing demographic of women – those without children.”
